Being on Wurundjeri Land, I acknowledge itβs true owners - the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People of the Kulin Nation. As sovereignty was never ceded, I work as a landscape architect on stolen land. This has complexities, contradictions and responsibilities to these and all other Traditional Owners whoβs land I may work and live on to respect, listen, and learn. I am inspired to keep the spirit and magic in these ancient landscapes.
Sarah Haq-Qureshi is a landscape architect living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). Born in England, her family migrated from the picturesque coast of Devon to Barngarla Country - the remote and beautiful west coast of South Australia, where she grew up.
She has degrees in landscape architecture and fine arts (sculpture major) which has included studying in India and Mexico.
Sarah is interested in design in the public realm and how landscape architecture can fit sustainably in to a wider context within a community, a street, a city or landscape and the world. This exploration has involved the design of wide range of projects with a diverse range of community groups. She is particularly interested in marginalised spaces and marginalised people. This has led her to work in Sri Lanka with the Planning Institute of Australia / AusAID / Red Cross as an urban designer and to undertake a Master of Social Science (2015). Creative influences range from Missoni, M.I.A and artist Mohamed Melehi to the Australia desert landscape.
She has worked on design projects in the public and private sectors for over fifteen years specialising in public space and urban park design including Moonee Valley Council (senior l.a. - streetscapes), City of Sydney (senior l.a.), OCULUS (associate), Hume City Council (l.a.), Brimbank City Council (senior l.a.), City of Yarra (public space designer), TCL (l.a.), Clouston (l.a.) and others.
She has also lead design studios at RMIT landscape architecture department and Monash University MADA (Architecture).
In 2020 the Union Road Upgrade and Aged Friendly Streetscapes Toolkit won an Australian Institute of Landscape award (Victorian branch) for Civic Landscapes.
